App Building Inside Work Platforms
Gaurav Agarwal, COO of ClickUp, on how AI is redrawing the competitive map in productivity
App building is becoming a distribution feature, not a standalone category, for horizontal work platforms with rich internal data and reusable building blocks. ClickUp’s bet is that once models can generate decent code everywhere, the real edge shifts to where the app lives after generation, inside tasks, docs, permissions, dashboards, and workflows that already exist, so the output is immediately usable by teams instead of becoming another disconnected tool.

ClickUp is not treating app building as blank page software creation. It is wiring coding agents into existing work objects, so a generated dashboard or workflow inherits access controls, records, lists, approvals, and sharing rules that are already in the workspace. That makes the app easier to deploy inside a real company.
-
Specialized builders like Replit and Lovable still matter, but for a different reason. They win on fastest path from prompt to working app, then add enterprise layers like GitHub sync, SSO, RBAC, private deployments, and compliance. Their advantage is speed and dedicated developer workflow, not ownership of the surrounding work system.
-
The broader market is already moving this way. Glean’s agent builder is expanding from search into internal tools, and ClickUp has long framed its strategy around owning work data and reusable primitives. As app generation gets cheaper and more common, platforms that already hold company context can absorb more of the no code and internal tools budget.
Over the next few years, the winning products will bundle app generation with the place where teams already plan, approve, and track work. Vibe coding will spread widely, but the durable moat will come from governance, shared context, and how easily a generated app plugs into day to day operations across an entire company.
