A huge part of it is that it just works.

What wins in agent software is not raw model intelligence, but the boring reliability of getting through real workflows without breaking. In practice, that means Codex became the default surface for this user because it could stay connected to four email accounts, four Slack accounts, calendars, iMessage, Grain, Linear, and browser actions well enough to run about twenty daily automations, while Cowork still felt less polished and more fragile in edge cases.

  • The clearest proof is behavior, not preference. This setup now handles inbox scanning, draft writing, podcast summaries, Reddit competitor scans, call insight extraction, expense categorization, release notes, and daily promise tracking. Once an agent sits on top of that much personal context, switching costs rise fast because the value comes from all the connected routines, not one chat thread.
  • Reliability here means concrete operational details. The Google Workspace connection only became useful after custom API setup, longer lived auth, and a daily health check. The user still spends about 14% of agent usage maintaining skills and automations, which shows that it just works is relative, but good enough to trust for repeated tasks.
  • This matches the broader pattern in agent tools. Single tool and two to three tool workflows are now dependable enough for daily use, but reliability drops sharply once four or five systems must pass information across formats and permissions. The product that hides that complexity best is the one that captures usage.

The next step is not smarter chat, but better workflow infrastructure, memory, and review surfaces. As agent products improve tracing, permissions, and voice control, they move from power user habit to default operating layer for knowledge work, and the company that makes cross tool automation feel routine will own far more of the workday.
