UPS Vendors Control Battery Channels

This part of the stack is controlled by the UPS vendor, not the battery vendor. ZincFive can win a slot inside Vertiv or ABB projects because its nickel-zinc cabinets are already qualified with their UPS systems, but that same qualification process means the OEM decides which chemistries get offered, when they get bundled, and how hard they are pushed in a bid. • Vertiv added ZincFive battery cabinets to its UPS portfolio in July 2024, and ABB had already approved ZincFive as a supplier, with more than 150MW of ABB MegaFlex deployments using ZincFive storage. That shows how access to OEM channels can unlock large projects that a standalone battery vendor would struggle to reach directly.1 2 4
• The gatekeeping power comes from battery optionality. ABB materials describe multiple UPS storage choices including VRLA, lithium-ion, flywheels, and other supported battery types, while Vertiv also markets lithium-ion UPS offerings. In practice, a buyer can ask the UPS vendor to compare footprint, runtime, recharge speed, safety requirements, and replacement cycle across several chemistries.3 5 6 7 8
• AI power buffering widens the fight beyond the backup room. ZincFive is pushing from central UPS cabinets into in-rack dynamic power, where the job is not just ride through during an outage but soaking up rapid swings in server demand. That puts nickel-zinc up against capacitors and other fast response storage designs in a different part of the power chain.9 10

The next step is a shift from being a qualified battery option to becoming a design standard for high power AI racks and retrofit programs. If ZincFive keeps getting embedded in OEM catalogs and expands from UPS rooms into rack level buffering, it can capture more of the protected power budget even while UPS manufacturers continue to own the customer relationship.1 4 9 10
