Pocket is already behaving less like a gadget company and more like a subscription software company that happens to use hardware to acquire users. The important signal is not just that people bought the $99 to $129 device, it is that recurring software revenue has already moved ahead of one time hardware revenue within months, which means the device is successfully getting users into a workflow where they keep paying to organize, search, and reuse conversations over time.

  • The device solves the part of note taking that Zoom, Google Meet, and other meeting tools cannot reach, offline conversations, phone calls, field sales visits, doctor appointments, and open houses. That makes hardware the entry point, but the paid product is really the cloud layer that turns recordings into searchable memory.
  • The monetization math points to strong early conversion. Pocket shipped more than 30,000 units in its first five months, and the company disclosed a $27M annualized revenue run rate with software at 54% of revenue. At Pocket Pro pricing of $19.99 per month or $149 per year, that implies many recent buyers are attaching a subscription quickly after purchase.
  • This is the same broad playbook Plaud has shown at larger scale. Plaud sells dedicated recording hardware, then layers on a paid AI plan for transcription, templates, cloud sync, and query features. Pocket reaching a software majority this early suggests the category can support durable recurring revenue, not just one off device spikes.

From here, the winners in AI note taking are likely to be the companies that own hard to capture real world audio and then keep users inside a paid knowledge layer. If Pocket keeps converting device buyers into subscribers at this pace, revenue should compound more like SaaS than consumer electronics, with each new shipment adding a growing base of recurring software spend.
