This marks Notion’s shift from charging for access to charging for output. Seats monetize how many people can enter the workspace, but credits monetize how much automated work gets done inside it. That matters because agents and Workers can keep running after the human buyer is already landed, turning Notion from a software subscription into a meter on recurring workflows like routing tasks, generating briefs, and updating systems.1 2 3 4

  • The new pricing layer is concrete, not cosmetic. Custom Agents moved onto Notion credits on May 4, 2026 at $10 per 1,000 credits, shared across the workspace, with unused balances expiring monthly and agents pausing when credits run out. That is a true consumption mechanic, not a premium seat upsell.2 5 6
  • This also changes who spends. Before, expansion mostly meant adding more paid users or upgrading the whole workspace to Business or Enterprise for AI. With credits, an ops team or developer can create one useful automation that keeps burning credits across the whole company, even if headcount stays flat.1 4 7
  • The closest strategic analogue is the broader move from collaborative SaaS into agent platforms. ClickUp is also framing the future as hybrid pricing with a growing usage component, because once AI starts doing the work, revenue tracks task volume more than employee count. Notion is early in making that shift explicit inside a mainstream productivity suite.4 8

From here, more of Notion’s monetization is likely to sit on top of the same meter. Workers joining the credit system on October 15, 2026 and Business plan AI moving to usage allowances push the product toward a model where workspace adoption gets the account in the door, then agent activity determines how much revenue each account can generate over time.3 4 9
