This points to a stack shift where the company that moves live data fastest can capture the data itself, not just pass it along. In an agent world, middleware is no longer a background pipe that runs nightly syncs. It is the system handling real time reads, writes, change capture, retries, auth, and tenant separation while agents decide and act. Once that layer already sees every event and keeps the freshest copy, it is one step away from becoming the operational store agents query first.

  • Ampersand already frames its product around the network, storage, and compute cost of moving customer data, not around simple connector fees. That matters because a company priced and architected like infrastructure is set up to keep more of the data path inside its own system over time.
  • The practical reason is latency. Snowflake and Databricks both now push harder into streaming and low lag pipelines, but their roots are still analytics and data engineering. Ampersand is describing a different job, which is feeding agents fresh tenant specific context so they can take actions now, not produce reports tomorrow.
  • There is precedent for the control point expanding. Plaid started as a way to connect apps to bank data, then became core financial infrastructure because developers built against its schema and rails. OpenRouter is doing something similar for model access, becoming the default layer where routing, billing, and usage data accumulate.

The next winner in agent infrastructure is likely the layer that combines transport, state, and orchestration in one place. If agents keep demanding live context and bidirectional actions, middleware vendors will keep moving upward into developer tooling and downward into storage, until the old line between integration layer and database matters much less.
