OpenAI is trying to stop being just a model vendor and become the place where work gets done, purchases happen, and AI services are delivered. That expands the market from selling tokens and subscriptions into software seats, labor budgets, commerce take rates, government contracts, and infrastructure economics. The common pattern is owning more of the workflow, from the user interface and agent runtime down to the compute that runs it.

On the product side, the expansion is concrete. ChatGPT now handles voice, files, spreadsheets, presentations, shopping research, health workflows, and persistent memory. Codex moves into the IDE and terminal, and Frontier packages agents for enterprises that want governed automation inside real workflows like finance, support, and operations.

This is also a move down the stack. OpenAI is no longer only selling API access, it is locking up cloud capacity through Stargate, Azure, AWS, Oracle, and custom chip partnerships. That matters because better access to compute improves model quality, lowers latency, and makes it easier to ship agent products at scale.

The competitive pattern is full stack convergence. Anthropic has leaned harder into enterprise model supply and developer experience, while OpenAI has pushed further into consumer surfaces and owned applications. The reported Windsurf deal shows why, owning the end product gives direct distribution, usage data, and a tighter loop for improving models.
The next phase is OpenAI turning AI from a feature into a default interface layer across work, software, and transactions. If that works, the company will look less like a chat app and more like a new computing platform, with revenue coming from many layers at once and much stronger lock in than a standalone model API can provide.
