Kraken IPO Pause Signals Optionality
Kraken
The hold signaled that Kraken had already done the hard part of IPO preparation and was choosing timing, not retreat. By November 19, 2025, Payward had confidentially submitted a draft S-1, which means the company had entered the SEC review process, but by March 2026 Reuters said management paused before public launch. That fits Kraken’s position as a profitable, fast growing exchange with fresh private funding at a $20B valuation, giving it room to wait for a stronger crypto equity window instead of pricing into a weak tape.1 2 3 4
- Kraken was not capital constrained. It raised $500M in September 2025 at a $15B valuation, then $800M in November 2025 and a separate $200M strategic investment from Citadel Securities at a $20B valuation. That private capital reduced the need to rush into public markets at a discount.1 4
- The business was increasingly IPO ready on fundamentals. Kraken was estimated at $1.5B of revenue in 2024, up 128% YoY, then $2.2B for full year 2025 in later company data, with a model centered on high value professional traders rather than mass market retail accounts.4 5
- The better comparison was not an early stage crypto listing, but a cross asset brokerage waiting for the right window. eToro filed for a 2025 IPO around a $5B valuation after reaching $931M revenue in 2024, while Kraken was already larger and positioning itself as exchange infrastructure for trading, stablecoin flows, and new financial apps.5 7
Going forward, the pause looked less like a cancellation and more like option value. Kraken kept building beyond spot crypto trading into a broader market and payments stack, which can support a larger public market story later. If crypto equities reopen, the company can return with more revenue, more product breadth, and a stronger case for premium pricing.3 4
