Block Sale Sets $480B Valuation
ByteDance
The $480B print showed that ByteDance had crossed from company run buybacks into true market price discovery, where outside buyers were willing to pay far above the company’s own employee tender levels. In practice, that means a third party bought an existing investor’s shares in a competitive auction, which refreshed the cap table without issuing new stock, and created a new valuation marker almost 45% above the August 2025 buyback at roughly $330B.1 2 3 4
- The jump was steep and fast. ByteDance moved from a $300B employee tender in November 2024, to about $315B in March 2025, to about $330B in August 2025, then to $480B in the November 2025 block sale. That sequence matters because it shows outside buyers marking the stock up faster than internal liquidity programs were doing.1 4
- This kind of auction solves a very specific late stage problem. An early holder like Bank of China Group Investment gets liquidity, a new investor gets a seat on the cap table, and ByteDance avoids dilution because no new shares are created. That is the core advantage of secondary sales over a new funding round.1 3
- The valuation gap also reflects how messy ByteDance comps are. As of January 2024, secondary markets valued ByteDance near $215B even though estimated 2024 revenue was $146B and TikTok U.S. alone was estimated at $27B. By 2025, investors were paying for a business that looked less like a discounted China internet stock and more like a global consumer platform with major AI upside.2 4
Going forward, ByteDance looks more like a privately traded mega cap than a conventional private startup. More block trades, tenders, and fund marks will keep building a live market in the stock, which raises the odds that future financing, employee liquidity, and any eventual listing will be anchored by secondary market price discovery rather than a single negotiated round.1 3
