Stripe added infrastructure that powers more than 110M programmable wallets

This turns Stripe from a company that moves money for businesses into one that can also create the wallet where that money lives and gets spent. With Privy, Stripe can let a developer add a wallet behind an email login, fund it with stablecoins, set spending rules, and route payments through Stripe infrastructure, which matters for consumer crypto apps, B2B treasury flows, and AI agents that need a wallet to transact on their own.1 2 3 4 5

  • The key product change is control of the full user flow. Instead of sending users out to MetaMask or another external wallet, Stripe can keep onboarding, wallet creation, balances, transaction signing, and checkout inside the app, which removes a major source of drop off and gives Stripe a place to attach stablecoin accounts, cards, and payouts.1 3 5
  • The competitive pattern is bundling. Fireblocks now sells embedded wallets through Dynamic, and Coinbase bundles embedded wallets with its developer platform and payment stack. Stripe is making the same move, but with an advantage in merchant distribution, because wallet features can be sold into existing Stripe payment relationships instead of as a separate crypto tool.2 6 7 8
  • The AWS AgentCore use case shows why programmable wallets matter beyond crypto apps. An agent can connect a Stripe Privy wallet, get a session spending cap, and pay for APIs or web actions over x402 without human approval at each step. That makes the wallet a machine spending account, not just a place to store tokens.4 5

The next step is that wallets become a default Stripe primitive, like payments APIs or billing. Once a wallet can hold stablecoins, trigger card spend, and authorize agent purchases, Stripe is positioned to own the account layer for internet commerce that runs partly on chain and partly on traditional rails.1 4 5
