This marks Perplexity admitting that search scale alone was never going to support a Google style ad business. At roughly 100M monthly active users, it had enough traffic to matter, but not enough to win mass market search economics against ChatGPT at roughly 1B users and Google at roughly 4B. So it moved to a higher spend product, where one power user running an agent all day can be worth far more than a casual searcher.

  • Perplexity had already tested a mixed model of $20 prosumer subscriptions, enterprise seats, and premium search ads. By February 2026 it dropped the ad path and pushed harder into prosumer work software, launching Computer the same month as its new wedge.
  • Computer is not just chat with a better answer box. It can use tools, connect to apps, and carry out tasks like shopping, email, and research workflows. Perplexity then added Computer Credits on top of Max and Enterprise Max, shifting from flat subscriptions toward usage pricing with higher spend ceilings.
  • The bigger competitive frame is that mass consumer AI is consolidating around huge distribution platforms, while agentic knowledge work is still open. Anthropic has Claude Cowork inside its desktop app, but startups like Sauna and Zo Computer are still competing on workflow, memory, and execution quality, not pure audience size.

From here, Perplexity looks less like a search engine chasing ad inventory and more like a prosumer work platform chasing wallet share per user. The next phase is deeper app connectivity, more persistent memory, and more background task execution, which is where agent products can become daily operating systems for knowledge workers.
