This is the core opening for new tax software, incumbents that grew by buying many point products become hard to modernize end to end. In sales tax, the real job is not just calculating a rate, it is pulling transaction data from billing and ERP systems, classifying products correctly, tracking nexus, then filing and remitting without manual cleanup. When those steps sit on partially stitched together systems, customers feel the seams in implementation time, support, and exceptions handling.

  • Avalara built broad coverage across customer types and tax categories, and that breadth made it the default incumbent. But the same breadth also raised integration complexity, especially for companies with modern billing stacks or SaaS specific edge cases, where newer vendors like Anrok and Taxwire rebuilt narrower workflows from scratch.
  • The practical effect of technical debt in tax software is that automation breaks at the ugly edges. Finance teams still end up fixing product mappings, checking filing calendars, and reconciling transactions across Shopify, Stripe, NetSuite, or custom systems, which is exactly where enterprise users expected the software to save labor.
  • The market split reflects this. Avalara remains the broad incumbent, Vertex sits higher upmarket with deep ERP integrations into systems like SAP and Oracle, and newer entrants win by making one slice feel much cleaner, faster to implement, and less dependent on consultants or internal IT teams.

The next phase of the category favors vendors that can unify calculation, registration, filing, and support in one clean workflow instead of assembling it through acquisitions. As tax compliance expands across more channels and countries, the winners are likely to be the platforms that reduce human exception work, not the ones with the longest feature list.
