Notion becomes sole independent builder

This deal clears the field for Notion to be the only scaled, still independent builder in modern workspaces that combines docs, databases, and AI into one product. Airtable was the closest match on product shape, especially for teams building internal tools and workflow systems on top of flexible tables and automations. Once Bending Spoons bought Airtable for $1.285B, after a drop from its 2021 peak and with the Hyperagent business carved out, the remaining product is less likely to keep setting the pace in this category.1 2 3 4

• Airtable competed with Notion at the architecture level, not just the feature level. Both let teams turn a blank canvas into a system of record, but Airtable leaned more database first, with stronger APIs and deeper workflow logic, while Notion leaned more document first and used that to spread across whole organizations.1 2 5
• The acquisition changes the incentive. Bending Spoons bought Airtable at about $480M ARR, growing roughly 20% YoY, and is widely known for buying mature software assets, cutting costs, and tightening monetization. That is very different from an independent company spending aggressively to win the next product cycle.2 6
• That leaves Coda as the nearest structural alternative, but Coda is no longer independent either. Grammarly agreed to acquire Coda in December 2024 and positioned the combination as a broader AI productivity suite, which means Notion now faces fewer standalone rivals whose entire roadmap is focused on the doc plus database workspace battle.4 7 8

Going forward, competition shifts from several independent workspace builders racing head to head, to Notion trying to outrun larger bundles. That favors Notion if it keeps shipping fast, because the open lane is no longer about surviving feature parity with Airtable, it is about becoming the default system where teams write, organize data, and run AI driven workflows together.1 3 4 8
