Xiaohongshu as Commerce Discovery Hub

Diving deeper into

Xiaohongshu

Company Report
Both Alibaba and JD.com have shifted from pure rivals to distribution partners.

This turns Xiaohongshu into the top of the shopping funnel, not the place that has to win checkout. A user sees a makeup review, outfit post, or home gadget recommendation in the feed, taps a product link, then finishes the purchase on Taobao, Tmall, or JD. That lets Xiaohongshu keep the higher value job of influencing intent, while larger commerce platforms handle payment, fulfillment, and merchant operations at scale.1 2 3 4

  • The Alibaba tie up matters because it lowers the cost of monetizing discovery. Xiaohongshu does not need to build as much merchant software, logistics, or after sales support if merchants can send demand into Taobao and Tmall, where those systems already exist.1 2 4
  • JD is using Xiaohongshu as an external product launch surface. Its 2025 New Product Growth Initiative explicitly linked off app seeding on Xiaohongshu to in app JD conversion, which is a concrete sign that JD sees RED content as upstream demand generation, not just competitor traffic leakage.3
  • This is different from Douyin. Douyin pushes harder to close the whole loop inside its own app and monetizes commerce more directly, while Xiaohongshu still leans heavily on ads and discovery. That makes partner checkouts a feature, not a bug, in Xiaohongshu's model.2 4

The next step is deeper plumbing between content and transactions. More posts will behave like storefront windows, with cleaner handoff into Alibaba and JD, while Xiaohongshu keeps expanding search and recommendation. If that works, it becomes harder for brands to launch products in China without buying visibility inside Xiaohongshu first.1 2 3 4
