TAF turns FPV drones into loitering munitions
TAF Industries
The real shift is that TAF is turning cheap hand flown FPV drones into software defined weapons, where the scarce piece is no longer the airframe but the guidance board that takes over after jamming. In practice, that means a unit can keep using commodity motors, frames, and radio gear, then add a small clip on computer to preserve terminal accuracy when the video link drops. That pushes basic FPV kits closer to purpose built loitering munitions without paying for a full new missile like system.1 2 3 4
- TAF already sells flat packed FPV kits built from off the shelf components and custom firmware, so a platform agnostic guidance module fits its manufacturing model. The value sits in the software, camera, and onboard processing, not in a proprietary airframe, which lets the same module spread across many drone shapes and payload setups.1 2
- This moves TAF up against established loitering munition vendors like AeroVironment and WB Group from the opposite direction. Switchblade 600 and Warmate are integrated systems sold as dedicated munitions with their own launch and control stack, while TAF starts with a much cheaper FPV drone and adds autonomy only for the last seconds that matter most.3 4
- The battlefield driver is electronic warfare. Sacra research on TAF and peers repeatedly points to jamming as the main failure mode for radio linked FPV drones. A visual terminal guidance board is essentially an anti jamming patch, it gives the pilot manual control for most of the flight, then lets the drone finish the attack if the link is broken near the target.2 6 7
The next step is a split market. Premium vendors will keep selling longer range, fully integrated loitering munitions, while companies like TAF will sell low cost airframes plus bolt on autonomy modules that make expendable FPV drones good enough for mass use. If that model keeps working under heavy jamming, the center of value in this category will keep moving from hardware to onboard guidance software.3 4 6 7
