Company Report
Ramp, Mercury, and Brex are expanding into payroll, treasury, and AP/AR from the spend management and banking layer
Analyzed 11 sources

This is a bundle war over the operating cash account, because the company that already sees where money sits and where it leaves can bolt on adjacent workflows faster than a payroll native can move into banking. Ramp, Mercury, and Brex each started from cards or business accounts, then added bill pay, treasury, and payment controls so finance teams can review invoices, route approvals, move cash, and reconcile books without leaving the same system that already holds spend data and bank balances.

  • Ramp is the clearest example of adjacency compounding. It built from cards into bill pay and checking, where invoices can be emailed in, auto drafted, approved, and paid from a Ramp Checking Account by ACH or wire. That makes AP a natural extension of spend management, not a separate product sale.
  • Mercury is running the same play from startup banking. It already owns deposits, treasury, cards, and venture debt, and its Bill Pay product turns the Mercury account into an AP hub with invoice inboxes, approval rules, payment scheduling, and accounting sync. That puts it directly on top of the same cash movement Niural Wallet wants to intermediate.
  • Brex shows how far the category has converged. Its business account can send and receive ACH, checks, and wires, earn yield through treasury structure, and fund bill payments from Brex accounts or linked external banks. The product line now looks less like a card tool and more like a finance operating system anchored in cash management.

The next step is deeper convergence between payroll rails and finance automation. Banking led players will keep pushing upstream into scheduled wages, contractor payouts, and receivables, while payroll led players push downstream into wallets, treasury yield, and payable workflows. The winner is likely the platform that becomes the default screen where a controller starts and ends the day.
