Location features are bundled into tiered Cisco and Meraki wireless licenses, making them effectively free for existing customers.

Bundling turns indoor location from a separate software sale into a default feature of the Wi-Fi estate, which gives Cisco a powerful wedge in deals where good enough accuracy is enough. A hospital or campus that already pays for Cisco or Meraki wireless can light up maps, occupancy, and basic device location without buying another system first. That shifts the buying question from whether to add location, to whether the use case is precise enough to justify a specialist layer.1 2 3 4 5

  • Cisco ties Spaces directly to existing wireless subscriptions. Current Cisco materials say Essentials is included with Cisco Wireless Essentials and Meraki Enterprise, while Meraki MR Advanced maps to Cisco Spaces Advantage. That makes entry level location software feel prepaid for customers already standardized on Cisco Wi-Fi.1 2 3
  • What those bundled tools do is broad but usually infrastructure led. Cisco packages indoor location, occupancy, maps, APIs, IoT integrations, and workflow apps on top of access points that act as sensors. Aruba ALE similarly calculates device location from WLAN controller or cluster data and feeds analytics systems through APIs.2 4 5
  • That is why incumbents can win room and zone level use cases on price. If a manufacturer mainly wants to see which building, floor, or area an asset or person is in, using the Wi-Fi network already on the ceiling is cheaper and simpler than deploying a dedicated anchor network. The specialist opening starts when workflows break unless accuracy gets much tighter.2 4 5

The market is moving toward a split. Incumbent Wi-Fi vendors will keep absorbing broad location features into network licenses, which raises the bar for standalone vendors. The remaining premium segment will be the workflows where a few feet of error is unacceptable, such as precise asset retrieval, automated industrial steps, and hands free navigation inside complex facilities.1 2 4 5
