U.S. Defense Funding Advantage

Diving deeper into

Destinus

Company Report
competitors maintain advantages in funding (particularly from defense contracts) and domestic regulatory pathways.

The real edge for U.S. rivals is that defense money and regulators can shape the product long before any commercial passenger market exists. Hermeus is already using DoD contracts to pay for prototypes, test flights, engines, and mission software, while Venus Aerospace can work inside U.S. aerospace institutions through NASA agreements. Destinus has meaningful European grants and defense revenue, but it is still building from a smaller capital base and through a more fragmented regional pathway.1 2 3 4 5 6

  • Hermeus has raised more than $500M in private capital, versus about $29M for Destinus, and also expanded a Defense Innovation Unit program to a $219M ceiling. That means U.S. government customers are not just future buyers, they are helping fund the flight test ladder that proves the aircraft works.1 2 3 4
  • Regulatory advantage is practical, not theoretical. Hermeus is building uncrewed defense aircraft first, which lets it mature propulsion, autonomy, and payload release under military programs before facing civil passenger certification. Venus Aerospace also benefits from being plugged into NASA research agreements in Houston, close to U.S. test and policy infrastructure.2 4 5 6
  • Destinus has found its own workaround by selling drones into defense markets and using more than €40M in Spanish grants to build hydrogen engine and flight infrastructure. That gives it a bridge to revenue, but it is still a different funding model from a U.S. startup whose core hypersonic program is directly subsidized by Pentagon demand.3 4

The next phase is likely to split the market into two tracks. U.S. startups will keep using defense procurement to turn hypersonic R&D into funded operational programs, while Destinus will try to turn Europe’s rearmament and hydrogen policy support into a distinct regional champion. The winners will be the teams that make testing routine and procurement repeatable.1 2 3 4 5
