Redis Compatibility Becomes Acquisition Channel

Redis protocol compatibility now helps rivals get adopted faster, because buyers can swap in a Redis lookalike without changing application code. That shifts competition away from command syntax and toward who owns the cloud console, networking, billing, and default service slot. AWS and Google can use Redis compatible services to pull workloads into their own managed stacks, while Microsoft sells Redis Enterprise through an Azure controlled front door.

Valkey turned compatibility into a shared public standard. After Redis changed its license in March 2024, the Linux Foundation launched Valkey from Redis 7.2.4, backed by contributors including AWS and Google. That made Redis APIs easier for large platforms to copy, extend, and distribute at scale.

Google packages Redis compatibility inside Memorystore alongside Valkey and Memcached, with the same GCP networking, monitoring, failover, and billing surface. For many teams, the buying decision becomes which managed service is easiest to turn on inside their existing cloud account, not which company invented the protocol.

Microsoft shows the other path, distribution without full ownership. Azure Managed Redis runs on Redis Enterprise technology and Microsoft is steering Azure Cache for Redis users to it through 2027 and 2028. Redis supplies the engine, but Microsoft still controls provisioning, pricing surface, and customer access inside Azure.
The next phase is a race to add higher value layers above basic caching. Redis has to win on features that are harder to clone, like operational tooling, multi model data services, and AI oriented workloads, while hyperscalers and Valkey based vendors keep using wire compatibility as the easiest way to capture existing Redis demand.
