Chewy Converts Modern Animal Into Vet Network
Modern Animal
This deal turns Chewy from a retailer that refers pet owners into care into an owner of the care itself. Modern Animal already had the hard part built, 29 clinics, employed vets, a membership app, and 24/7 virtual care. By buying it, Chewy gets the exam room, the prescribing workflow, and the pharmacy handoff in one system, so a food and meds customer can become a clinic patient without leaving Chewy’s orbit.1 2 3 4 5
- Modern Animal was the closest lookalike to Chewy Vet Care because both combined physical clinics with software, memberships, and prescription fulfillment. Modern Animal sold unlimited exams and app based care, while Chewy had already launched its own clinics in Florida, Colorado, Georgia, and Texas before the acquisition.2 3 4 6
- The acquisition changed Chewy’s clinic scale overnight. Chewy said Modern Animal added more than $125M of annualized run rate revenue and expanded Chewy Vet Care from 18 to 47 locations. That matters because veterinary clinics are local and slow to build one by one, while demand compounds when pharmacy, food, and records are already attached.2 6
- Owning the network also changes the economics. Instead of only making money when a pet owner buys food or refills a prescription, Chewy can earn membership fees, exam revenue, diagnostics, procedures, and downstream pharmacy revenue from the same pet. Modern Animal had already shown those pieces can live inside one app centered workflow.1 3 4 5
The next phase is turning clinics into Chewy’s highest value acquisition and retention channel. As Chewy layers Modern Animal’s software and care model across its broader customer base, the winner in pet health will look less like an online store with services attached and more like a vertically integrated pet care company that owns the relationship from first visit to refill.2 5 6
