Net revenue retention was approximately 900%.

A 900% net revenue retention rate means Anthropic was not just keeping customers, it was turning early footholds into much larger spending pools inside the same accounts. The pattern fits an AI usage business where one team starts with coding or API access, then broader deployment drives far more token consumption. Anthropic reported more than 11,900 customers above $100,000 in trailing 12 month revenue, contributing $26.1B, while more than half of $100K customers now buy more than one product.1 2

  • This is very different from normal SaaS expansion. A mature software company might celebrate 120% to 130% net revenue retention. Anthropic reached this level because revenue scales with usage. More prompts, longer context, more agent runs, and more code generation all directly increase spend inside an existing account.1 3
  • Claude Code appears to be the main expansion engine. By May 2026 it had reached $8B in annualized revenue, and Anthropic linked the 2026 step up in revenue to agents doing reasoning, writing, and testing code, which pushed billable token consumption to 80% of company revenue and helped lift gross margin to 85% from 12%.1
  • The customer mix shows both concentration and breadth. No single customer was above 10% of revenue, but the top five were about 25% for the first nine months of 2026. At the same time, customers outside the top five generated 79% of Q3 revenue, which suggests the expansion story was broad based, not just one hyperscaler or one breakout app.2

Going forward, the key question is whether Anthropic can keep converting narrow model usage into company wide workflows before competitors and cheaper models slow expansion. The strongest path is deeper product bundling, where coding pulls in chat, workplace integrations, and API usage, turning Anthropic from a model vendor into a default operating layer for AI work inside large enterprises.1 2 3
