Company Report
Benchling has also acquired the teams from ReSync Bio and Sphinx Bio to accelerate its AI roadmap;

These hires show Benchling pushing past record keeping into the part of lab work where experiments are actually run, monitored, and improved. ReSync built software for coordinating compute, experiments, and data across the design, make, test, analyze loop, while Sphinx built real time analysis tooling. That moves Benchling closer to being the operating layer that sits between scientists, instruments, and AI models, not just the system where results are stored after the fact.1 2 3

  • Benchling already had the core system of record for biotech teams, with about 1,200 customers and an estimated $210M ARR by mid 2024. Adding orchestration and live analysis lets it capture more of the daily workflow inside those accounts, where switching costs are higher because the software touches active experiments instead of archived data.4 5
  • This follows a pattern. Benchling previously bought Overwatch Research to add in vivo study management, then expanded robotics and analysis integrations. ReSync and Sphinx extend the same playbook into AI native lab execution, where software decides what to run next, pulls instrument outputs, and feeds them back into the next experiment.3 6 7
  • The competitive backdrop is shifting from ELN and LIMS vendors toward companies trying to own the full scientific loop. Newer players like Lila Sciences and Discovery Loop are built around tighter connections between models, lab infrastructure, and proprietary experimental data. Benchling is responding by turning its installed base and workflow data into an AI distribution advantage.8 9 10

The next step is a lab stack where Benchling can suggest experiments, trigger workflows, read outputs as they arrive, and keep permissions and audit trails intact across the whole process. If that vision lands, Benchling becomes harder to replace, because ripping it out would mean rebuilding not just records, but the labs execution layer itself.1 7 10
