By filling more of the cart with products sourced or controlled more directly, FirstClub makes shoppers come for selection and trust, not just speed, and keeps more gross profit per order.

BigBasket has long pushed in house brands, and other online grocery models like Weee have used exclusive supplier relationships to lift gross margin above traditional grocery levels by cutting out middlemen and reducing direct price matching.

When customers are buying pantry staples, fresh items, and discovery products together, differentiated selection can justify a larger weekly stock up rather than a one off fill in order.
  • The main comparison is not Instacart style aggregation, where most economics sit with partner retailers, but a more vertically controlled model. In marketplace grocery, the app is mostly a demand layer on top of other stores. In FirstClub's model, the assortment itself is the product, which gives it more control over margin, merchandising, and repeat behavior.

The next step is pushing exclusives from a merchandising tactic into a habit loop. If FirstClub can keep expanding ownable brands, trusted fresh supply, and morning replenishment missions, it can become the default weekly grocery app for affluent households. That would make it less comparable to a delivery utility and more comparable to a modern premium grocer with an app attached.
