Europe's Shift from Clones to Builders
The state of European venture
The real advantage was never originality, it was speed. Europe spent years using the US as a product roadmap, then racing to launch local versions before incumbents crossed the Atlantic. That worked best in consumer internet, where Rocket Internet and its orbit repeatedly copied proven models like Groupon, Zappos, Birchbox, and Square, then adapted them to Europe's fragmented markets, languages, and payment rules. As capital tightened, investors started rewarding businesses built for Europe's actual structure instead of businesses copied from Silicon Valley.

Rocket Internet turned this into a system. It launched fast follower businesses across categories, Zalando after Zappos, CityDeal after Groupon, Payleven after Square, and Glossybox after Birchbox. The playbook was to remove product risk by copying something already proven, then win on execution and regional rollout.

That model fit Europe because Europe is not one market. A founder had to localize for many countries, languages, and regulations, so being first in Europe could create a temporary moat even without inventing the idea. The hard part was not the app screen, it was stitching together operations country by country.

The shift now is from imported ideas to first principles building. Recent European winners are more often global products like Spotify, Adyen, Elastic, and DeepMind, or businesses built around distinctly European problems like Wise, Booking.com, Zalando, and Farfetch. Investors increasingly want proof that a company can win beyond one country before pricing it as a continental champion.
The next phase of European venture should produce fewer clones and more companies that either sell to the world from day one or turn Europe's complexity into an asset. That favors founders who can combine local technical talent with sharper product judgment, and it should make the best European startups look less like delayed Valley replicas and more like category leaders in their own right.
