GPTZero got in through individual teachers who can try a free tool in minutes, while Turnitin sells to provosts, district buyers, and LMS administrators through annual campus wide contracts. Once enough teachers start asking for specialist AI detection, the easiest institutional response is usually not a second vendor, but a bigger bundle from the incumbent that already handles plagiarism checks, grading workflows, and assignment submission.

  • Turnitin is built for centralized procurement. It serves 17,000 institutions and 71 million students, usually through unlimited use licenses priced around $3 per student per year, then layers on paid add ons like AI detection. That structure favors expanding contract value inside existing accounts over winning one teacher at a time.
