Runway is trying to own more of the movie making value chain, not just sell a video model. By pairing its own Gen models with editing tools, enterprise credit contracts, and Runway Studios funding, it can get paid at more steps of production and turn studio relationships into proprietary data access. That matters because better training data and closer workflow fit are what separate an enterprise film tool from a consumer prompt box.

  • The clearest example is Lionsgate. Runway signed a September 18, 2024 partnership to train a custom model on Lionsgate's 20,000 title library. That gives Runway access to licensed film and TV footage that smaller rivals like Luma do not have, while Lionsgate gets tools for storyboarding, preproduction, and effects workflows.
  • Runway monetizes beyond a simple self serve app. Its product stack spans subscriptions from $12 to $76 per month, enterprise credit pools on annual contracts, and studio oriented production efforts through Runway Studios and the Hundred Film Fund. Each layer increases wallet share from serious media customers compared with Luma's broader, lower revenue prosumer footing.
  • The revenue gap shows how this strategy compounds. Runway reached an estimated $70M ARR by December 2024 and $90M by June 2025, versus Luma at about $8M ARR in December 2024. In practice, Runway is selling a workflow for teams that need repeatable output, approvals, collaboration, and budgeted render credits, not just a one off generated clip.

The next step is a tighter loop between studio deals, proprietary models, and production software. If Runway keeps turning entertainment partnerships into custom datasets and enterprise workflows, it can become the default AI layer inside film and TV production. That would push the market toward a split where Luma serves broad creation demand and Runway captures the highest value professional spend.
