Orchestration Layer for Regulated Fintech

The key point is that fintech infrastructure does not consolidate like cloud infrastructure, because each layer carries its own licenses, audits, risk controls, and regulator relationships. A company can own servers end to end the way AWS does, but in finance the stack is split across specialist jobs like identity checks, sponsor banking, card issuing, and brokerage custody. That makes the winning product less a monolith, and more a clean orchestration layer that makes separate regulated systems work like one product.

A fintech launching accounts and cards still has to decide who checks identity, who holds deposits, who issues cards, and who runs the ledger. BaaS platforms exist because going directly to banks and providers can take 18 to 24 months, while a pre-integrated stack can shrink that to weeks or same day testing for some use cases.

The economics also push specialization. BaaS platforms often make money from subscription fees, per user fees, transaction fees, and a smaller share of interchange, while the fintech usually keeps the customer relationship and the biggest share of upside. That means the infrastructure layer wins by reducing operational pain, not by owning every product itself.

Brokerage custody shows why specialist pieces persist. DriveWealth and Alpaca are standalone companies built just to let other apps embed trading, with their own licenses, clearing relationships, and developer APIs. That is exactly the kind of narrow but hard infrastructure role that is difficult for a general BaaS platform to replicate well.
The market is heading toward more packaged coordination and more underlying specialization at the same time. The infrastructure winners will be the platforms that make regulated point solutions feel interchangeable to developers, while the deepest moats stay with the companies that own hard compliance heavy functions like custody, KYC, and bank sponsorship.
