Orbs turns ads into purchases

Diving deeper into

Discord

Company Report
Discord's Orbs system — launched globally in July 2025 — creates a new conversion loop: users earn Orbs by completing Quests and redeem them for Nitro credits and profile cosmetics.

Orbs turns Discord’s ad product into a feeder for paid consumer revenue, not just a brand campaign slot. A user watches a trailer or completes a game task inside Quests, earns a balance that lives in the account, then spends it in the Shop on Nitro credits or cosmetics. That moves people from passive ad exposure into an owned purchase flow, which is why the pilot produced a 16x jump in first time Shop purchasers and brought in a cohort that was 79% new to the Shop.1 2 3 4 5

  • The loop is concrete. Quests pay out Orbs on desktop and mobile, Shop items show both cash and Orb prices, and users can redeem for temporary Nitro, profile effects, avatar decorations, and some catalog items. That trains users to browse the Shop and learn what paid Discord perks feel like before putting in a credit card.1 4 5
  • This also makes Quests more valuable to advertisers. Discord positioned Orbs as a reward layer for sponsored Quests in May 2025, then expanded Quests with Arena Quests, mobile video, and measurement partners including Kantar, AppsFlyer, and Gamesight. Better rewards raise completion, while better measurement helps game studios justify spend.2 6 7 8
  • The model is different from Slack’s seat based monetization and closer to a game economy. Slack charges each active worker. Discord can let a very large free user base stay free, then monetize a small share through Nitro, Shop purchases, and ad funded rewards. Orbs strengthens all three by making free usage, ads, and premium goods reinforce each other.3 9

The next step is a fuller virtual economy around Quests, Shop, and Nitro. As more campaigns pay in Orbs and more rewards become Orb eligible, Discord can turn advertiser budgets into subsidized sampling of premium features, then convert that sampling into recurring Nitro demand and higher Shop attachment over time.1 2 6 7
