Stoke Must Prove Nova Reusability

Company Report
If Stoke cannot deliver on Nova's first mission and demonstrate reusability before competitors establish market positions, the company may struggle to capture sufficient market share

This is mainly a race to become the second dependable launch option after SpaceX, not just a race to prove clever engineering. Stoke needs Nova to fly, then show that the same hardware can come back and fly again, before buyers lock in multi launch relationships with rivals. The company has built its own Cape Canaveral pad, validated its upper stage landing concept with Hopper in 2023, and raised capital at a scale that assumes it can turn technical novelty into an operating launch business, not just a test program.1 2 3 4

  • The bottleneck is not only reaching orbit. Nova is designed around full reuse, including the upper stage, which is the hard part competitors usually avoid at first. That raises the upside if it works, but it also means Stoke must prove a more complex system before customers fully trust schedule and price claims.1 3 4
  • The competitive window is tightening. Relativity says Terran R is set to start launching from Cape Canaveral in late 2026, and it has already signed more than $3 billion of launch agreements. Once launch providers win those manifest slots, they gain repeat missions, flight data, and procurement credibility that are hard to dislodge.6 7 8
  • The capital base makes delay more expensive. Stoke has raised rounds from $100M in 2023 to $260M in January 2025, $510M in late 2025, and a $1B Series E at a $10B valuation in September 2026. That funding buys time and manufacturing scale, but it also raises the revenue bar Nova eventually has to clear.2

From here, the market should reward the first company after SpaceX that can stack flights, recover hardware, and turn that into predictable launch slots. If Stoke gets Nova into service quickly, full reuse could open a lane in responsive launch and in space transport. If not, medium lift demand will increasingly be spoken for before Nova has a chance to earn it.3 4 6 7 8
