This is really a fight over who controls the operating model after VMware. Nutanix wants customers to move from VMware into a broader Nutanix stack that now stretches from HCI into bare metal Kubernetes and AI services, while Spectro Cloud sells the control plane without forcing the underlying stack. In practice that means teams can keep choosing their own OS, Kubernetes distro, storage, and networking instead of adopting one vendor’s full bundle.

Nutanix is broadening from virtualization into platform ownership. NKP Metal, announced on April 7, 2026, brings bare metal Kubernetes under the Nutanix operating model, and Nutanix Enterprise AI adds managed model serving and policy controls on top. That makes Nutanix more of a full stack replacement path, not just a hypervisor swap.

Spectro Cloud is positioned one layer higher. Palette is a central management plane for clusters across cloud, data center, and edge, and its edge design is built to manage thousands of small sites, even with intermittent connectivity. That matters for retailers, restaurants, and industrial fleets where one standardized HCI stack often breaks on cost or footprint.

Red Hat takes the opposite path from Spectro Cloud. OpenShift packages containers, virtualization, AI, and automation into one integrated stack, which simplifies buying and support but narrows component choice. Spectro Cloud is selling flexibility against both Nutanix and Red Hat, especially for buyers that do not want infrastructure, AI, and automation tied to one vendor base.
The next phase of VMware displacement will hinge less on hypervisor features and more on who becomes the new default control layer for Kubernetes, VMs, and AI infrastructure. Spectro Cloud has the clearest lane where customers want one management layer across mixed hardware and software, especially at the edge, while Nutanix and Red Hat will keep pushing bundled stacks as the simpler enterprise standard.
