competition has shifted from raw search quality to delivering an agent-ready, enterprise-controllable retrieval stack.

The real fight is now over who owns the control layer between enterprise data and the agent. Raw web relevance still matters, but buyers increasingly want a system that returns usable text instead of blue links, lets teams choose sources and filters, plugs into internal knowledge stores, and exposes knobs for cost, latency, and governance. That shifts competition from consumer style answer quality toward developer workflow, enterprise controls, and retrieval orchestration.

  • The product shape has changed. Tavily returns pre scraped text chunks with citations, plus crawl, extract, and multi step research tools. Cohere chose it over Brave partly because the API returned the text an LLM needs, without extra scraping and cleanup work.
  • The market is splitting into layers. Exa and You.com build AI native retrieval APIs around their own indexes. Tavily acts more like an aggregator. Perplexity bundles retrieval with an answer engine. Algolia comes from enterprise search and wins by giving teams ranking rules, connectors, and governance on top of live indexes.
  • Enterprise controllability is becoming the wedge because internal deployment is messy. Large companies care less about one best answer and more about whether they can restrict domains, connect SharePoint or filings, preserve security boundaries, and tune how much compute and reasoning a query gets.

Going forward, retrieval vendors that become the default control plane for both open web and private company knowledge will move up stack into full agent infrastructure. That favors products that combine search, extraction, connectors, ranking controls, and domain specific data access in one system, and squeezes vendors that only return generic search results.
