Exporting Data Instead of Electricity

This shifts Panthalassa from being an offshore power project into being an offshore compute product. The node does not need a grid connection or a cable landing permit to sell useful work. It turns wave energy into on site inference, then sends only the much smaller result back over satellite. That can be a much cheaper path than laying subsea power lines, especially when the job is model serving, sensor processing, or other workloads where output is far smaller than raw power moved to shore.

• The economic trick is to move compute to the energy source. Crusoe did this on land by putting modular data centers next to stranded gas wells. Panthalassa applies the same logic offshore, using wave power and seawater cooling so the expensive thing moved across distance is data, not electricity.

• This also changes the networking requirement. A normal offshore generator needs high voltage export cable capacity. Panthalassa needs enough satellite backhaul for inference results and cluster coordination. That is practical for output light workloads, but much harder for training jobs or any use case that must constantly move huge datasets.

• There is precedent for ocean based compute, but not this exact stack. Microsoft proved underwater data center hardware could run reliably and connect back to shore, then stopped short of making it a product. Panthalassa adds autonomous marine operations and self generation, which removes cable dependence but adds more systems to prove at once.

If Ocean-3 works, offshore compute will look less like utility infrastructure and more like a new class of remote inference node. The winners will be companies that can package cheap local energy, cooling, autonomy, and enough backhaul into one reliable box, then target workloads where sending answers is far easier than sending electrons or giant datasets.
