Alibaba ownership turns model distribution into a channel advantage, not a marketing problem. Kimi can be dropped into places where work and transactions already happen, inside DingTalk for office workflows, inside Taobao tools for merchants writing listings and ads, and inside Alipay mini apps for consumer and service use cases. That means Moonshot can reach companies and end users through software Alibaba already controls, instead of paying to win each user one by one.

  • DingTalk is already a large enterprise software surface. Alibaba says it serves over 2.2 million companies, and DingTalk had 28 million paying daily active users in March 2024. Embedding Kimi there gives Moonshot access to teams that are already running approvals, chat, docs, and low code workflows inside Alibaba software.
  • Taobao and Tmall already sell AI tools to merchants, and over 360,000 merchants used those tools for marketing and promotions in fiscal 2024. Kimi can slot into that existing merchant workflow, helping sellers draft product copy, generate images, answer customer questions, and manage storefront operations at the point where merchants already spend money.
  • The tradeoff is that Alibaba is both distributor and competitor. Alibaba has been pushing Qwen across DingTalk and cloud products, and has committed RMB 380 billion to AI and cloud infrastructure over three years. That makes the channel powerful, but it also means Moonshot grows inside an ecosystem that has its own foundation model agenda.

The next phase is less about adding more standalone Kimi users, and more about becoming the AI layer inside Alibaba workflows. If that happens, Moonshot can convert distribution into durable enterprise revenue, while Alibaba gets a stronger application partner that helps drive AI usage across commerce, payments, and workplace software.
