Retool isn't great for proactive blocking or if you want to prevent transactions from taking place.

This reveals the line between an internal tool and a risk system of record. Retool is strong when an ops team needs one screen that pulls data from many systems and lets an authorized employee make changes. Unit21 is built for the next step, which is scoring activity before money moves, automatically stopping or holding transactions, and turning alerts into investigations with case management and audit trails tied to fraud and AML workflows.

  • Retool’s sweet spot is fast internal software for dashboards, admin panels, and human in the loop actions on top of databases and APIs. Lithic used it to let ops staff configure card programs and run internal processes that engineers had handled before. That is different from a dedicated fraud engine making real time risk decisions on every payment.
  • Unit21 was built around the moment before funds move. Its core workflow is ingesting transaction, identity, and behavioral data, applying custom rules and models, then sending alerts into case management so teams can block, review, or file compliance work from the same system. That is why proactive interdiction matters more here than dashboard convenience.
  • The practical gap is custom engineering. A fintech can assemble monitoring and controls inside Retool, especially for unusual data models, but doing deep investigations, maintaining decision logic, and wiring in real time blocking creates a larger build and maintenance burden. That is the budget and headcount tradeoff Unit21 is selling against.

Going forward, the winning products in fintech risk will look less like flexible internal builders and more like execution systems that both decide and investigate. As real time payments grow and fraud windows shrink to seconds, value will keep moving toward platforms that can ingest messy data, stop bad transactions instantly, and give compliance teams a full operating workflow in one place.
