The real edge for incumbents is not better models, it is control of the workflow and the data exhaust around it. GE Hitachi and Framatome already sit inside outage execution, maintenance, engineering review, and instrumentation upgrades, so they can bundle software into multi year service contracts. That makes them slower to ship stand alone AI products, but hard to displace because the plant already relies on their people, systems, and historical operating data.

  • GE Hitachi’s OPA software is built for planning and running refueling and maintenance outages, while its broader APM stack connects sensor data, logs, work orders, and equipment records. That means AI features can be added on top of an existing operating system for plant work, not sold as a separate tool.
  • Framatome approaches AI through engineering and services programs such as digital twin diagnostics, outage optimization, and 3D modelization tools like InSite 360TM. In practice, this is AI embedded in engineering services for existing fleet customers, especially in Europe, rather than a fast moving software only motion.
  • The startup contrast is Atomic Canyon, which trained FERMI on more than 53 million NRC document pages and won Diablo Canyon for regulatory search and analysis. That kind of focused product can move faster on one task, but it does not come with the outage crews, instrumentation footprint, and service agreements incumbents already have.

The market is likely to split into system owners and feature innovators. Large nuclear vendors will keep absorbing AI into long term plant service relationships, while startups prove new workflows in narrow jobs like document search or condition report analysis, then push incumbents to adopt those capabilities inside the broader stack that runs the plant.
