Character.AI has to convince someone to download a separate app, learn a new social graph, and then absorb the full inference cost from that usage on its own balance sheet.

Meta introduced 28 AI characters across Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp in September 2023, then extended Meta AI into search, messaging, voice, image generation, and personalization across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp through 2024 and 2025. That means every product improvement ships into an existing audience and existing habits, not a new destination app.

Character.AI still has strong engagement, with 20 million monthly active users, about 75 minutes of daily use, and $30 million in annualized revenue as of July 2025. But its business depends mainly on a $9.99 subscription and it spends millions per month on inference, so growth brings real serving cost. Meta can treat AI characters as an engagement feature that supports its much larger ad machine.

OpenAI is the closest structural analog to Meta on distribution. Its GPT Store let ChatGPT users build and browse custom personalities inside an existing product base, with more than 3 million GPTs created by January 10, 2024. The pattern is the same, standalone character apps now compete less on novelty and more on whether they offer a use case or community that big platforms do not already bundle.
The market is moving toward AI characters becoming a native layer inside larger consumer surfaces. That pushes standalone players like Character.AI toward sharper differentiation, deeper fandom, stronger creator ecosystems, and formats like voice, video, and group interaction that feel less like a generic chatbot tab and more like a destination people cannot get from a bundled assistant.
