Bank Funding Advantage over CloudWalk

Diving deeper into

CloudWalk

Company Report
The structural risk they pose is on funding cost: bank-owned acquirers can access capital at rates that an independent fintech cannot match

Funding cost is the quiet lever that decides who can profitably turn payment flow into credit. Once an acquirer starts advancing card receivables or making working capital loans, it is no longer just taking a fee on each swipe, it is borrowing money, waiting to get repaid, and keeping the spread. CloudWalk funds that loop through FIDCs and in app deposits, while bank linked rivals can pull from a cheaper balance sheet and existing merchant banking relationships.1 2 3 4 5

  • CloudWalk has already moved deep into this model. InfinitePay gives merchants next day or instant settlement, then monetizes Nitro advances and working capital loans backed by merchant receivables. Those advances have been financed with more than $1.3B of FIDC debt issuance, so the price of wholesale funding directly affects margins and how aggressively it can price credit.1 2
  • Bank owned acquirers are built differently. Cielo is tied to Banco do Brasil, Rede sits inside Itaú’s SMB banking stack, and Getnet remains connected to Santander’s merchant banking network. That means acquiring can be bundled with deposits, checking, payroll, and receivables prepayment, with funding supported by a bank cost of capital instead of only securitization markets.3 4 5 6 7
  • This matters most outside big cities and in lower ticket merchants. CloudWalk wins with app first onboarding and low hardware needs, but incumbents can use branch networks, local sales coverage, sponsored regional distribution, and bundled software to keep merchants sticky even if core acquiring fees compress. In that setting, the cheapest lender can still earn acceptable returns after price cuts.2 5 6 7

The market is heading toward acquiring as a thin margin entry product and credit as the real profit pool. If CloudWalk keeps growing its deposit base inside InfinitePay, it can narrow the structural gap with bank owned rivals. If it does, the company can shift from winning on fast settlement alone to winning on a full loop of payments, deposits, and merchant credit.2 5
