The real test is not whether Castelion can hit Mach 5 plus, it is whether that speed changes target math enough to win budget against much cheaper missiles bought by the thousands. Hypersonic speed matters when minutes decide whether a mobile launcher, ship, or air defense battery is still there by impact. If the mission is fixed infrastructure or broad salvo warfare, buyers can often trade speed for volume, lower unit cost, and easier production.

The Air Force is already funding HACM as its main air breathing hypersonic path, with a FY2027 request of about $404M for initial procurement after years of prototyping. That means Castelion is not proving the category exists, it is proving a new supplier can deliver similar mission value with a better cost and production story.

At the other end, Anduril has a three year framework to deliver at least 1,000 surface launched Barracuda-500M missiles per year, plus a Poland production deal. That is the clearest alternative theory of victory, enough range and precision, but optimized for large magazines, allied co production, and routine manufacturing instead of hypersonic performance.

Lockheed is also pushing affordability and scale in hypersonics, which narrows the room for a startup to win on speed alone. Castelion has to show a concrete operational wedge, like faster kill chains against mobile, time sensitive targets, where arriving much sooner is worth buying fewer rounds and accepting harder manufacturing.
This market is heading toward a split between mass strike weapons and premium fast response weapons. Castelion’s upside comes from making hypersonics feel less like an exquisite science project and more like a repeat buy munition for the missions where time to target is the whole point.
