OpenAI projected 278B cash burn
OpenAI
This forecast says OpenAI is no longer constrained by demand, it is constrained by financing. The company has reached a scale where selling more ChatGPT seats or API tokens does not by itself solve the problem, because the business is committing cash to chips, data centers, leases, and supplier backed infrastructure faster than revenue converts into free cash flow. Even a record $122B round in March 2026 only buys a few years of runway at the current spending trajectory.1 2 3 4
- The math is stark. OpenAI closed a $122B round on March 31, 2026 at an $852B valuation, after raising $40B in 2025 and $6.6B in 2024. But the company page also points to projected cumulative negative free cash flow of $278B from 2026 through 2030, which implies the March round can be absorbed well before those losses peak.1 2 3
- This is what makes supplier relationships strategic, not just operational. OpenAI is still leaning on partners and financiers tied to compute, including Amazon, Nvidia, and Microsoft in the March round, plus reported Nvidia support around large data center commitments. The business model increasingly looks like pre financing the electric grid for AI, then earning it back over years of model usage.1 3
- The cleanest comparable is Anthropic. Anthropic scaled from a $9B annualized revenue run rate at the end of 2025 to $65B by July 2026 and reached operating profit, yet investors still had to weigh roughly $500B in planned compute and infrastructure spending ahead of its IPO. Frontier labs are starting to resemble infrastructure companies with software like growth, not normal SaaS companies.4 5
Going forward, the winners in frontier AI will be the labs that turn giant capital commitments into durable, high frequency revenue streams, especially coding, enterprise workflows, and distribution bundled into everyday software. OpenAI has already proved it can create demand. The next phase is proving it can finance that demand faster than infrastructure spending compounds.1 4 5
