Building the plant itself is what turns Loyal from a biotech with a promising drug into a pharma business with software like unit economics. If Loyal can make tablets in house, it avoids paying a contract manufacturer to run small batches, hold extra inventory, and add its own margin. That matters because Loyal sells a daily pill for under $100 a month, so keeping pill costs low is what makes a subscription model work at scale through vets.

The company is not just outsourcing formulation and focusing on R&D. It is setting up a Denver tableting facility, with recent funding earmarked for manufacturing scale up and launch prep. That means production is part of the core plan, not a temporary bridge before handoff to a third party.

This also tightens the workflow for a regulated product. Loyal develops the drug, manufactures it, then ships it into veterinary channels where vets prescribe and owners refill monthly. Owning manufacturing gives tighter control over batch quality, supply reliability, and refill availability, which is critical for a chronic medication that must stay continuously in stock.

A 50% plus gross margin target is credible in animal health, but it is not elite incumbent level yet. Elanco reported adjusted gross margin around 51% in late 2025, while Zoetis reported gross margin above 80%, showing that Loyal is targeting a viable commercial floor first, not the full profitability of a scaled incumbent portfolio.
If the launch works, manufacturing will become one of Loyal's main advantages, not just a back office function. The next step is using that plant to support more longevity drugs, more refill volume, and eventually a broader senior dog portfolio, which would let fixed plant costs spread across many prescriptions and push margins higher over time.
