ChatGPT Integration Threatens Character.AI
Character.AI
The real threat is not just better models, it is better models bundled into products people already use every day. Character.AI sells a destination app for role play and companionship, while OpenAI can turn similar character creation into one feature inside ChatGPT, which already has massive reach, stronger model capability, voice, image, and custom GPT tooling. That shifts competition from character quality alone to distribution, product breadth, and ability to subsidize heavy inference costs.

Character.AI had 20 million monthly active users in early 2024, 75 minutes of daily engagement, and about $30 million in annualized revenue by July 2025, mostly from a $9.99 subscription. That means a very engaged audience, but still a relatively small revenue base to fund millions of daily conversations and the compute bill that comes with them.

OpenAI made custom chatbot creation a built in consumer behavior. GPTs launched in November 2023, the GPT Store followed in January 2024, and OpenAI said users had already created more than 3 million GPTs within two months. In practice, that overlaps with Character.AI's core loop of making and sharing personalities, but with stronger base models and ChatGPT distribution.

This pattern is already visible across the category. Replika monetizes companionship with roughly $24 million to $30 million in annual revenue and about 2 million monthly active users, while MiniMax's Talkie sits in the global top tier with Character.AI and Replika. The market is filling with either focused companion apps or giant platforms that can absorb companion features into broader ecosystems.
Going forward, standalone character apps will win by owning a specific emotional and entertainment use case that horizontal AI products treat as a side feature. The labs and platforms will keep collapsing generic chatbot use cases into their main apps, so Character.AI's path is to deepen character persistence, creator tools, voice, and social formats faster than general purpose assistants can turn those into defaults.
