The real bet is that AI shifts power from the app where work happens to the app that holds the most context. In this model, Shopify keeps owning the commerce brain, product data, checkout, and store building logic, while ClickUp tries to become the place where a merchant asks for work to be done, reviews outputs, and ties them to campaigns, inventory, customer notes, and team approvals. That is less a head on product fight than a control fight over the daily interface.

  • Shopify is already exposing commerce actions to outside agents. Its recent product releases include AI store building, Sidekick inside admin, commerce skills for agents, and MCP style building blocks for catalog, cart, and checkout. That makes the idea concrete, not theoretical. ClickUp would not need to recreate commerce infrastructure, only call into it.
  • ClickUp’s angle is that commerce work is rarely just commerce work. A website launch also touches creative briefs, campaign calendars, copy reviews, bug tickets, inventory checks, and post launch analysis. ClickUp has spent the last two years pushing the all in one model, so an embedded Shopify agent fits its broader effort to keep those adjacent workflows in one shared workspace.
  • This is part of a larger rebundling pattern. Instead of buying separate software for every narrow task, companies may keep a few horizontal systems with lots of native primitives, then plug in the best vertical agents when needed. The winning horizontal product is the one that can pass the right context, permissions, and history into those vertical tools without making users switch apps.

Over the next few years, more vertical software is likely to show up as callable skills inside broader work hubs. Shopify is pushing hard to become the default commerce layer for that world, and ClickUp is pushing to become the operating layer around it. If both succeed, merchants will build and run stores through fewer screens, with more of the workflow handled by agents.
