Collaborate on Azure Compete Across Clouds

Diving deeper into

Databricks

Company Report
Microsoft's partnership with Databricks on Azure creates a dynamic in which the companies collaborate on one cloud while competing on others.

This is less a simple channel partnership than a controlled overlap, where Microsoft uses Databricks to strengthen Azure while building its own full stack data product everywhere else. On Azure, the two companies jointly ship Azure Databricks as a first party service with integrated billing, identity, and deep ties into Microsoft tools like Fabric and Power BI. But Microsoft Fabric also bundles data engineering, warehousing, data science, and BI into a Microsoft native layer that can absorb workflows Databricks also wants to own.1 2 3 4 5

  • Azure Databricks is unusually tight for a partner product. Microsoft describes it as designed in collaboration with Databricks, with Microsoft identity, native connectors, and Azure billing built in. That makes Databricks a better Azure workload, even though it remains an independent platform company.2 4 5
  • The competitive tension shows up at the workflow level. A team can ingest and process raw data in Databricks, then analyze it in Power BI or Fabric, but Fabric now also offers its own shared lake, pipelines, warehousing, real time processing, and data science stack. That pulls Microsoft closer to owning the whole loop itself.1 3 5
  • This pattern is common across data infrastructure. The broader market has moved from many single purpose tools toward rebundled platforms, and cross cloud vendors win by being the layer above any one cloud. That is the same logic behind dbt positioning itself as a control plane across Snowflake, Databricks, and hyperscalers.6 7

The likely end state is a sharper split between cloud native suites and cross cloud control planes. Microsoft will keep making Fabric the default choice for Azure centered enterprises, while Databricks will keep selling openness, multi cloud portability, and a broader independent AI and data platform across Azure, AWS, and GCP.1 3 6 7
