Reviewing context
Brex’s real move is turning a one product card business into a finance system that can own more of a company’s daily money workflow. Once a finance team uses Brex not just to swipe cards, but also to issue employee cards, route approvals, pay vendors, reconcile travel, and hold cash, Brex gets more revenue streams and becomes harder to rip out than a standalone card program.1 2 3
- The software layer changes what Brex sells. Instead of earning only interchange when a card is used, it can also charge subscription fees for spend controls and compliance tools, while adding deposit income, FX fees, and bill pay style revenue. Internal research shows interchange is still the largest piece, but its share is falling as software and financial products grow.2 3
- This is also how Brex competes with Ramp. Ramp used bill pay and software to overtake Brex on payment volume by the end of 2023, which pushed the market away from pure card volume and toward higher margin finance software attached to payments. In practice, the winner is the product that touches the whole approval to payment to accounting loop.4 5
- Brex is taking two different product shapes for two different buyers. For startups and mid market companies, it bundles bank account, card, bill pay, travel, and spend controls into one package. For enterprises, it increasingly sells card and spend management as a best of breed layer inside tools like Navan and Coupa, where Brex handles the payment and reconciliation behind the scenes.3 5
The next step is deeper attachment, not more cards. As more spend moves through bill pay, travel, procurement, and global cash workflows, Brex can look less like a card issuer and more like the operating system for finance teams, which is where better margins, stronger retention, and larger enterprise contracts come from.1 3 5
