Reddit Revenue Dominated by Ads
Reddit is still an ads business first, which means its financial outcome is driven mainly by how well it turns messy community discussion into something big brands will pay to appear next to. The side businesses matter because they monetize the same content in different ways. Advertisers buy access to intent rich conversations inside subreddits, AI partners pay to license the corpus, and a small group of users pays for an ad free experience and extra features.1 2 3 4 5
- Advertising is the core engine by a wide margin. Reddit said the majority of revenue comes from ads, and its 2025 10 K shows about 94% of 2025 revenue came from third party advertising. Earlier research pegged ads at about 93% of revenue in 2022, showing continuity even as the business scaled.1 2 4 5
- Data licensing is valuable because it sells the same raw material twice. Reddit already organizes millions of posts and comments into topic specific archives with strong intent signals, and it recognizes content licensing revenue over license periods. That makes AI licensing high margin incremental revenue layered on top of the ad business.1 4 5
- Premium is strategically useful more than financially large. Reddit says revenue from products sold directly to users, including Reddit Premium and Reddit Gold, was not material for the periods presented. That puts Reddit closer to Facebook than Discord, where subscriptions are the main monetization layer instead of a small add on.1 3 6
Going forward, the biggest upside is not replacing ads with licensing or subscriptions. It is using AI and better ranking to make Reddit ads work better, while keeping licensing as a high margin second stream. If that works, Reddit stays primarily an ad company, but with a more valuable data layer sitting underneath it.3 4 5
