Vast pre-sells sovereign astronaut flights

Vast Space

Company Report
Vast Space is adopting Axiom's go-to-market tactic of selling sovereign astronaut missions before its own station is available.

This move turns astronaut flights into Vast Space's customer acquisition engine, long before Haven-1 is in orbit. Axiom proved that ISS missions can do more than bring in revenue. They let a station company train crews, run joint science plans, learn NASA and SpaceX operations, and build trust with national space agencies that may later buy seats, lab time, or entire station programs.1 2 3 4 5 6

  • Axiom built this playbook in public. NASA says Axiom has flown four private astronaut missions to the ISS from April 2022 through June 2025, and Axiom frames those flights as precursors to its future station. That gave it years to convert one off missions into government relationships before its free flying station exists.1 2 3 7
  • Vast is following the same sequence, but with a more concentrated sovereign sales push. Internal coverage shows agreements tied to France, Greece, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and the UK, plus a NASA private astronaut mission selection. In practice, these countries are not just buying transportation, they are buying a national crew slot, research agenda, and early influence over a future station partner.8 5
  • The reason this matters is schedule risk. Haven-1's target has slipped from 2025 to 2026 to 2027, while Vast has invested more than $1B and still has minimal operating revenue. Selling missions before station availability gives it a way to create demand, operating experience, and political backing now, instead of waiting for hardware completion.8

The next phase is a race to lock in repeat national customers before commercial stations are real and scarce flight opportunities disappear. If Vast can turn early sovereign missions into recurring astronaut, research, and station contracts, it will arrive at Haven-1 with customers already trained on its system, which is exactly how a services business becomes infrastructure.1 5 6 8
