From Drones to Defense Primes
Europe's $250M/year cruise missile factory
This is a land grab to become Europe’s next full stack defense contractors, not just successful drone vendors. The winning companies are using one proven product to get inside procurement channels, then widening into adjacent layers like strike weapons, autonomy software, ground systems, and manufacturing so they can sell a bigger package and own more of the mission budget, the same path that turned Anduril from border towers into a multi domain defense prime.1 2 3 4 5 6 7
- Destinus started with drones and propulsion, then moved into cruise missiles and a missile JV with Rheinmetall. That matters because primes win by combining design, production, and government access, not by shipping one standalone aircraft.1 5 7
- Quantum Systems is following the same expansion playbook from ISR drones into copters, AI pilots, ground robots, and motors. Helsing is taking the software first route, tying its HX-2 strike drone into Altra so customers buy a connected reconnaissance and strike network, not a single munition.2 3 8 9
- Incumbents still have scale and contract muscle. Rheinmetall did €9.9B of 2025 sales and is now partnering with Anduril to build European variants of Barracuda and Fury, which shows how fast autonomy startups and legacy primes are converging around the same system of systems model.4 6 10
The next phase is fewer pure drone companies and more integrated weapons and autonomy groups that look like modernized primes. In Europe, the leaders will be the ones that pair sovereign manufacturing with reusable software, then turn battlefield proof into repeatable, multi program procurement across air, land, and strike systems.1 2 3 4 6 8 10
