only the robotic vacuum — led by iRobot's Roomba, which sold 50 million units before iRobot filed for Chapter 11 in December 2025 — has previously achieved scaled product-market fit

Roomba proved that home robots can sell at mass scale, but it also showed how narrow the winning recipe has been. Vacuuming works because it is a repetitive floor level job, the robot can stay on one surface, and the user only has to press start and empty a bin. That is very different from folding laundry, climbing stairs, opening cabinets, or handling clutter, which is why general home robotics is still an open market despite decades of consumer interest.1 2 3 4

  • iRobot sold more than 50 million robots worldwide, and filed Chapter 11 on December 14, 2025. That makes Roomba the clearest proof that consumers will buy a robot for the home, but also the main evidence that scaled adoption has so far come from one simple chore, not from general purpose assistance.1 2 3
  • Roomba succeeded with appliance like behavior. It cleaned floors without asking households to change routines much, and it hit a price point far below humanoids. By contrast, 1X prices NEO at $20,000 or $499 per month, with current task speeds still measured in minutes for basic chores like folding a sweater or loading a few dishes.4 5
  • The next wave is splitting into two bets. 1X is trying to build a full body home worker that can move through the house like a person. Sunday Robotics and The Bot Company are aiming for cheaper non humanoid machines that do a narrower set of chores well, closer to the Roomba playbook of one frequent task, high reliability, and lower price.4 5 6 7

The category now looks less like consumer electronics and more like a race to find the second household task that can become habitual, trusted, and cheap enough to live in millions of homes. If 1X can use early deployments to turn teleoperated chores into autonomous routines, it has a path from premium novelty to the first broad home robotics platform beyond floor cleaning.4 5 6
