Winning Workflows Over Primary Accounts

Chime

the concept of one account being their 'primary account' from where they make most of their purchases is depreciating.

This shift weakens the old neobank playbook of winning one paycheck and then owning most card spend. Chime grew by persuading users to route direct deposit into a Chime account, because that account then became the place where groceries, gas, and bills happened, which directly drove interchange revenue. As payroll routing gets easier and more divisible, consumers can leave income in one place, save in another, and spend through whichever app offers the best rewards or convenience that week.1 2 3

  • Direct deposit used to be sticky because switching was painful. New payroll connectivity products turned it into a few clicks, and also made split deposit practical. That matters because a customer no longer has to fully leave Chase or Wells Fargo to try Chime, or fully commit to Chime once they join.1
  • For Chime, this is not just a branding issue, it is a revenue issue. The company still depends heavily on interchange, and interchange only appears when the Chime card is used. If paycheck dollars are fragmented across Chime, Cash App, brokerages, and high yield cash accounts, Chime can keep the customer relationship while losing the spend volume.2 3 4
  • The competitive set also gets wider. Chime is no longer only fighting banks and neobanks for a full account switch. It is also competing with payroll apps, investing apps, and closed loop wallets that can capture just one slice of the paycheck and monetize that slice better than a general purpose checking account can.1 2 3

The next phase is a move from winning the primary account to winning the primary workflow. The strongest consumer finance apps will be the ones that give people a concrete reason to route one part of income there every month, whether for early pay, short term credit, higher yield, bill management, or rewards, and then stack enough useful products to keep that slice growing over time.2 3 4
