Workflow lock-in hinders Fourier adoption
Fourier
The real barrier is workflow lock in, not just device replacement. Hocoma already sits across gait, balance, early mobilization, and arm rehab, so therapists know when to move a patient from Erigo to Lokomat to Andago to Armeo. Fourier is answering with a broader connected stack through RehabHub and faster product refresh cycles, but winning an incumbent account means retraining therapists, rewriting care pathways, and proving that a multi device Fourier setup fits daily clinic routines as smoothly as the installed Hocoma system.

Hocoma sells a full neurorehab ladder, not a single flagship robot. Its product line spans Erigo for early mobilization, Lokomat for robotic gait, Andago for overground gait and balance, and Armeo for upper limb therapy, plus clinical application training and evidence resources that reinforce therapist habits around those tools.
-
Fourier is competing by bundling more of the clinic into one software layer. RehabHub connects more than 30 device types, so a center using several Fourier systems can track sessions and progress in one interface instead of treating each machine as a standalone purchase. That makes Fourier look less like a single robot vendor and more like a rehab platform vendor.

The next comparable threat is Wandercraft, not just Ekso. Wandercraft says Atalante X is already used in more than 100 rehab and research centers and is using that installed clinical base to fund a humanoid program, while Ekso has leaned into clinician friendly FDA cleared exoskeleton procurement in the US. That shows the category is moving toward broader platforms with regulatory and clinical credibility, not isolated devices.
The centers most likely to switch first are newer programs, cost sensitive buyers, and hospitals building robotics suites from scratch. If Fourier keeps using manufacturing speed to close feature gaps and turns RehabHub into the operating layer across multiple therapies, it can win greenfield accounts first, then move upstream into premium neurorehab centers as therapist familiarity and clinical references compound.
